Maskne is the most recent skin problem due to the continuous use of masks. We never thought we would see ourselves doing our daily life in a mask, and neither did our skin. Our skin definitely was not prepared to deal with maskne. So, the big question is: How can we stop maskne?

But first, what is maskne?

Maskne is the acne developed due to the frequent use of face masks. This happens due to the friction of the mask on the skin for hours without rest. It is a global term that can range from mechanical acne to contact dermatitis. However, it is more commonly associated with mechanical acne.

That being said, let’s see what can we do to stop and prevent maskne.

Choose your mask right

Some specialists suggest that 100% cotton is the right choice because it will allow your skin to breathe. We wouldn’t go as further, but we would definitely recommend that if you choose a washable mask, you should wash it regularly. And by regularly, we mean every single day, if you use it during the whole day. Another good option seems to be disposable masks, as long as you change them frequently. This way it there won’t be an accumulation of sweat and sebum on the mask.

Keep it simple

This is probably the best piece of advice you can get if you are experiencing maskne. Reduce your skincare routine to the essential: clean, hydrate, and protect. Too many products may contribute to greater skin irritation.

Choose a mild cleanser and use it at least twice a day to keep your skin as clean as possible.

Then go for a moisturizer, serum, or cream/gel, adapted to your skin type. To hydrate the skin you should look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides.

Do not forget to apply sunscreen every single day. Our suggestion goes to oil-free sunscreens that will not contribute tp the accumulation of oiliness under the mask.

If your skin is damaged from the friction, you can apply a repairing cream before wearing the mask, to protect the skin,

Give your make-up a break

Make-up is also a factor that may contribute to the development of maskne. As we said before, keep it simple. Less is more, because the skin is damaged and trying to adapt to this new reality.

If you already have maskne…

All the above recommendations are still valid. Nevertheless, when choosing your skincare routine, take into consideration the actual state of your skin. A skin with maskne and oiliness will benefit from products that control oiliness and some specific care for pimples and breakouts.

As usual, if this new acne you are experiencing does not goes away, perhaps its time to call in a professional and schedule an appoitment with the dermatologist.

Just know that we share your feelings about maskne, however the most important is that we all keep wearing the mask and stay safe.
