La Roche-Posay history thermal spa town

La Roche-Posay thermal water source was supposedly discovered in the 14th century by chevalier Bertrand Du Guesclin when he stopped at the spring to drink some water. According to the legend, his horse suffered from eczema and plunged into the spring water and came out cured.

However, the first analyses to reveal the properties of this water were only conducted in the 17th century by the doctor of Henry IV and Louis XIII. In 1905, opens the first Thermal Center in the village of La Roche-Posay, built by the order of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The properties of the Thermal Water were recognized later on and the town was considered a Thermal Spa Town. The creation of Laboratoires La Roche-Posay brand happened in 1975. It was born by the hands of Mr. Rene Levayer, a pharmacist. The goal was to develop safe, effective, and simple skincare products that would be recommended by dermatologists.
