What is exfoliation?

Exfoliation is a process of mechanical, chemical or enzymatic removal of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface.

  • Mechanical exfoliation uses a physical agent to exfoliate whether it is a tool, as a sponge, or granules contained on the product;
  • Chemical exfoliation is performed with products containing acids in low concentrations, as salicylic acid, glycolic acid or lactic acid. Another type of chemical exfoliation is enzymatic exfoliation where the ingredients used to exfoliate are fruit enzymes like papain and bromelain.

Exfoliation helps to improve skin texture and quality, by removing the dead cells at the surface, stimulating cell renewal and unclogging the pores. The skin is softer and smoother and feels more luminous, radiant and even. Plus, it allows the skin care products to penetrate deeper on the skin as exfoliation removes the dead cells from the surface.

How often should you exfoliate your skin?

Generally, the skin should be exfoliated one to three times a week, depending on your skin type. Even though exfoliation is good for the skin, over-exfoliating may also damage the skin.

Face exfoliation

To exfoliate your face, first, choose the right product for your skin type. Most of them are rinse-off products, so just apply the product on wet skin and gently massage with circular motions and then rinse thoroughly with water. In case you prefer an exfoliating toner, just apply a few drops of the product on a cotton pad and apply on the face with light touches and do not rinse.

Exfoliation for dry skin and sensitive skin

Sensitive skin and dry skin can benefit from exfoliation, however with moderation. Choose a chemical exfoliator with a very low concentration of acids or a chemical exfoliator with soft and smaller particles, as long as it is indicated for sensitive skin. In any case, do the exfoliation gently as not to disrupt the skin and do not use the exfoliator more than twice a week, start with less frequency and if your skin tolerates then increase the number of times per week.

Exfoliation for combination to oily skin

Combination skin to oily skin and even skin with acne can take advantage of exfoliation to unclog the pores and reduce the excess sebum. Nevertheless, if the exfoliation is abrasive to the skin, it will not help, so do a gentle and soft exfoliation, and do not intensely rub the skin.

Exfoliating toners

For the lovers of chemical exfoliation or the ones who would like to perfect the skin, let me introduce you to purifying toners that perform a micro-peeling on the skin. You can just apply them on the skin with a cotton pad, no need to rinse afterward.  Be careful however with the concentration of acids and also with sensitive areas of the face, like the cheeks.

Body exfoliation

If you do not exfoliate your body, then this will be a major acquisition to your shower routine. It is a luxurious moment of self-care during the shower that will make you relax, as these exfoliators feel indulgent and have unforgettable scents. Plus, it will make your body skin brighter and radiant and will enhance the permeation of your body cream, lotion or oil. If you keep it in your bathtub, you will not forget to use it at least once a week during the bath or shower.

Quick reminder: after exfoliating, do not forget to moisturize and nourish your skin!
